The Avalanche’s recent waiver move increases flexibility on the fourth line

Forwards Chris Wagner and Tye Felhaber, the latter of whom just signed a new two-way contract with the team, were claimed off waivers. Wagner was free and Felhaber’s placement was announced on Wednesday.

Wagner has played 22 games this season for the Avalanche and 5 for their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles. Wagner scored a goal in each of those stints with each club. He was granted an exemption on November 14th. Due to waivers, Wagner had to be placed on waivers again in order to be sent back to the AHL, which was announced Tuesday morning. He has been free since Wednesday. This is his third waiver transaction this season.

Another announcement also came Wednesday saying the Avalanche had placed forward Tye Felhaber on waivers. The Avalanche recently signed Felhaber to a two-year, two-way contract, making it possible to call him up to the NHL to bolster their injury-plagued roster.

The 26-year-old forward made his NHL debut on Tuesday in Colorado’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, where the Avalanche lost 3-1.

The NHL’s roster freeze is scheduled to begin Dec. 20, meaning NHL teams cannot initiate any transactions, be they trades, moves between the NHL and its AHL affiliates or waiver claims. You can start transacting again after December 27th.
