Brock Purdy and the 49ers are in the midst of a disappointing season, but San Francisco general manager John Lynch remains as confident as ever in the 24-year-old quarterback.

Lynch described his continued belief in Purdy in an interview with Brian Murphy and Rod Brooks on the KNBR show “Murph & Markus” Friday morning.

“Brock has been great for us since he stepped on the field. It’s been a little difficult this year,” Lynch told Murphy and Brooks. “I saw something this week where… because sometimes you have to take a step back to really figure out what went wrong.” We have analysis and everyone will tell you, “Okay, here’s the actual breakdown.” But sometimes you have to distance yourself.

“I saw a thing where last year was together, [Christian] McCaffrey, [Brandon] Aiyuk and Deebo [Samuel] had a combined 40 touchdowns between the three. This year there are two. If that is the case, things will be different. A lot of it is injury, and other parts of it have other reasons.

“We have a lot of confidence in Brock. One of the things we love about him is his resilience and his ability to come back after difficult moments and difficult games. I think our entire team will be tested this year. We all did it.” To do this together, we need to figure out why things went wrong. First and foremost, we need to focus on Miami and hang in there this year. I’m trying to scratch and claw for every win, whether it has playoff implications or not, because that’s what we’re paid for and that’s who we are .”

Purdy posted incredible numbers during the 2023 NFL season, finishing fourth in MVP voting after throwing for a franchise-record 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns and a league-leading passer rating of 113.0.

The third-year NFL quarterback’s numbers have declined across the board in 2024, with Purdy’s completion percentage, yards per attempt and passer rating significantly lower than a season ago.

The extended absence of McCaffrey and Aiyuk has certainly impacted the 49ers’ offense, with the entire unit looking like a shell of the group that steamrolled their opponents to the tune of nearly 30 points per game in 2023.

With Purdy set for a lucrative contract extension as he enters the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, it looks like Lynch and the rest of San Francisco’s leadership still see the 24-year-old as an important part of their future plans.
